Dear journal,
Today, I had the honor of presenting a seminar on Constructivist Grounded Theory to the Dissertation Chairs at William Woods University.
Even though it was over Zoom, it felt a bit like coming home. Seeing familiar faces, including several professors from my own graduate studies, was both humbling and deeply affirming.
My heartfelt thanks to Dr. Frank Giuseffi, my dissertation chair and Chair of Dissertation Studies, for the invitation and for his continued mentorship. To be asked to share my experience and use my dissertation as the example for this seminar was an incredible honor.
I would never call myself an expert, but after three years of research and writing, it was meaningful to reflect on what I’ve learned. This journey has taught me not just about Grounded Theory, but about patience, persistence, and the power of letting understanding emerge from real human experience.
After defending my dissertation, I honestly thought that would be the end of the journey. Getting to share it, and hearing such thoughtful, positive feedback, has planted a seed. I don’t know if it will grow, but perhaps it will find some fertile soil.
That seems fitting, though. Grounded Theory, after all, begins with what’s planted in the real world: small stories that take root, grow through reflection, and sometimes bloom into something larger than we ever expected.
The kind words shared today were more than encouragement; they were a reminder that this long road toward completing my doctorate was worth every step. If my presentation helps even one future scholar feel more confident about choosing Grounded Theory, then I’ve paid forward a small part of what was given to me.
Always,
Dave
